Born on March 27th 1986, she is the eldest daughter of Virtaly and Galina Verchenova. Her younger sister is named Anna. With dark brown hair and eyes she is also 176cm tall. A former ballet dancer, she studied the art for 10 years between 1992 and 2002. She took up the game at age 12 during a family vacation in the Czech Republic. Despite the lack of golfing facilities in Russia, she overcame with the help of her father. She found success early and had many amateur victories. She turned professionl at the end of 2006. Her rookie year on the Ladies European Tour was solid, and she registered a top ten at the tournament in Wales. She is yet to find the winners circle on Tour, but she has contended in several tournaments, most notably the Dubai Ladies Masters.

Maria participated in fourteen tournaments in 2009. Her highest placement was 24 at the Tenerife Ladies Open. Her and Anastasia Kostina played together as a team at Comunitat Valeniana European Nations Cup and finished in seventeenth place at the tournament in Spain.
